Published in 2010, The Flavor Thesaurus is part reference book and part empowerment tool. And more practically: Was there a book she could read to learn the tricks to flavor pairing? When the answer seemed to be no, she set out to write one herself. How did they know what would work? Segnit wondered. While she scratched grooves into the pages of her cookbooks from underlining the same steps over and over, they were untethered, creative, pairing flavors seemingly by instinct. The idea for The Flavor Thesaurus, as author Niki Segnit notes in the book’s introduction, came to her in a moment of “almost touching naivete.” A home cook with a crippling dependency on recipes, Segnit watched as her less-risk-averse friends threw things together in the kitchen-ingredients she never would have guessed could harmonize on a plate-to surprising success.

This doesn’t mean that the dates of the following 60-plus new releases are set in stone, or that audiences will show up in pre-2020 numbers for those that are coming out in theaters. The question for movie-release status quo will continue in 2023, as some of the production-pipeline delays and COVID-era skittishness about theatrical releases appears to be dissipating. Producer Pat Sandys of London Weekend Television first approached Prichard and the Christie estate with a researched, detailed plan to film the novels Why Didn't They Ask Evans? and The Seven Dials Mystery in the early 1980s. In addition to its availability on VHS and DVD, the series began to be released on Blu-ray Disc in October 2014, marking its 30th anniversary.Īgatha Christie had never been very happy with most filmed adaptations of her works, and according to her grandson Mathew Prichard, who handled her estate after her death, she "did not care much for television", either. Bowen, Julia Jones, Alan Plater, Ken Taylor and Jill Hyem, and the series was produced by George Gallaccio. All twelve original Miss Marple Christie novels were dramatised. It aired from 26 December 1984 to 27 December 1992 on BBC1. The repository is indexed by major search engines.ĮCommons is eclectic and often esoteric. If necessary, some material can be posted with limited access. "It's important to have a place to capture, preserve and make accessible the digital output of the university," says John Saylor, interim associate university librarian for scholarly communication and collections and chair of the committee that overhauled DSpace.ĮCommons can contain images, audio, video and datasets. What once was known as DSpace has become an expanding repository for Cornell research and scholarship. Now Cornell librarians have moved everything upstairs, dusted it off, put a new sign on the door and, most importantly, added a lot of new stuff. There were gems here and there, but you had to know where to look. Not long ago, wandering into DSpace, Cornell's online digital repository, was like exploring that dusty room in the basement of the town library, full of zoning maps and town council minutes from the early 1900s. But have no fear! Elektra, seeking to reform, has been subbing in as Hell’s Kitchen’s Daredevil, even relinquishing her former murderous ways. Except Daredevil is having a crisis of conscience (his latest) and recently remanded himself to prison as a means of clarifying that the law works equally toward more obvious criminals and masked vigilantes alike. But Daredevil is around to keep him in check – that’s good. In a nutshell, though: Wilson Fisk, formerly the Kingpin of Crime, has elevated to Mayor of New York City. (Sidebar: if you aren’t reading Zdarsky’s Daredevil, seriously, drop everything and read it and then come back. And while it’s somewhat difficult to appreciate some of the story’s nuances if you haven’t been reading Daredevil on a regular basis, there’s more than enough carefully-laid story beats and dialogue cues that will get the uninitiated up to speed. Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto are not fucking around.ĭevil’s Reign, spinning out of recent events in the writer’s seminal Daredevil run, is a master class in building tension, delivering narrative suspense, and, ultimately, delivering on expectations. They continue to be written about real-life events and many are performed as songs in the music charts. It begins:īallads are still written to this day. His ballad looks back to the traditions of murder ballads and political ballads which demanded change. Oscar Wilde’s The Ballad of Reading Gaol, written in 1897, is not about noble lords or ladies. The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword Oscar Wilde: The Ballad of Reading Gaol. It uses the ballad form to suggest the story is taking place in an older time period with courtly knights and ladies. Yet each man kills the thing he loves, By each let this be heard, Some do it with abitter look, Some with a flattering word. La Belle Dame sans Merci by John Keats (which translates from French into ‘The beautiful lady without pity’) was written in 1819. Many famous poets have used the ballad form over the years from Romantic poets like Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats, to Victorian poets like Christina Rossetti and Oscar Wilde. It is suggested further that a proper acknowledgement of the specter in Rebecca reaches beyond this particular novel, having subtle but significant implications concerning not only literary analysis but also social and cultural prejudices. Suggesting that the main characters in Rebecca are complete failures in dealing with the specter in a Derridean sense, the essay argues that the novel expects from the discerning reader a more insightful approach and a better potential to understand the specter. A “hauntological” reading of Rebecca through these tools yields results that are significantly different from traditional approaches. The essay complements this reading with the earlier comparable theory of the “phantom” and “transgenerational haunting” developed by psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok. This approach, termed “hauntology” by Derrida himself, revolves around the notion of the “specter” haunting the present and emphasizes the need to find new ways of responding to it, especially because of the existing ontological failure to do so. This essay focuses on the way the main characters in Daphne du Maurier’s novel Rebecca (1938) cope with the haunting influence of the past and attempts to read their struggle through the theoretical approach developed by Jacques Derrida in his Specters of Marx (1993). This framework further highlights the importance of money in contemporary credit/debt relationships and their contestation, which has so far received insufficient attention in relevant anthropological scholarship. This paper uses the Polanyian idea of "double movement" to show how the Croatian debt contestations responded to the distinctively peripheral form of financialization in Eastern Europe, characterized by hierarchical international relationships and an intensified expropriation of debtors. Much of this lending took high-risk and predatory forms that transferred significant risks to debtors, which in turn became the target of contestation by debt activists. Abstract: Croatia has experienced a marked boom in household debt in the 2000s. The final authenticated version is available online at: TBA.
